Courting - New Last Name

7/10

Courting New Last Name album cover

From the offset, Courting’s sophomore record ‘New Last Name’ draws you in with a neat hook and a promise to entertain. Jam packed with charm and moxie, the band have delivered a meticulously curated collection of autotuned pop bops. Pulling from an array of influences, the tracks are as rich in narrative as they are in sound. With a light hearted outlook and a tinge of nostalgia, there’s something for everyone which will keep you hooked from start to finish.

Taking to the studio to work alongside none other than indie rock legends The Cribs, the band have continued to experiment and expand their sound with a cool flair.  Continuing to find their feet and finesse their style, ‘New Last Name’ sees Courting steadily evolve, playing with song structures and genre with a slick ease. Quiet moments are every bit as potent as their heavier counterparts, as the bands exploratory efforts see them at their very best.

Overall, ‘New Last Name’ proves that Courting still know how to keep things interesting. While the autotuned elements may once again develop a marmite reception, the stylistic production and writing are what set them apart from their peers. Catchy hooks and anthemic choruses continue to dominate their repertoire, and are sure to inject even more life into their wonderfully chaotic live shows.

New Last Name is out 26th Jan via Lower Third
